The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner owned by the White Star Line, primarily built for the transatlantic route connecting Europe and North America. White Star Line commissioned Harland and Wolff to build Titanic and ultimately became one of the largest ships ever built at the time. Titanic was a ship that was supposed to exemplify luxury. Titanic had features such as an electric swimming bath, and had rooms built for squash. Titanic had features that early engineers of the 20th century would have dreamed of. The RMS Titanic commenced its maiden voyage of the 10th of April, 1912. It was supposed to be a relatively short trip beginning at Southampton- stopping at both Cherbourg and Queenstown- and crossing the Atlantic to its endpoint of New York. While Titanic carried a large number of wealthy passengers, the ship had many people of lower socio-economic standing that were hopeful to get to the American continent. It also carried engineers and musicians. Titanic’s numerous passengers was a great and rare representation of early 20th century society. Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the evening of April 14, 1912. The collision caused severe damage to the starboard side of the ship, letting water in. The ship was designed to remain afloat, though it still limited the ship to no more than two flooded compartments. After a few compartments, the ship was doomed. At around midnight, the passengers realized the gravity of the situation and started launching the lifeboats. For each boat, some passengers were left behind and the rule was based on tonnage, as opposed to the number of passengers. Within the next few days, the ship of dreams was no longer and over 1,500 people perished and would sit behind some of the most devastating peacetime maritime disasters. The RMS Carpathia rescued more than 700 survivors once the news traveled and even more so became devastated. The inquiries and investigation lasted longer than the deaths and news coverage. It took the world of newspapers to the next level and progressed the public's obsession with the passengers. The Titanic's fate changed maritime forever. It made world standards of policies even more strict. Ships were quadrupled in lifeboats and methods of iceberg monitoring were revamped. Communication was improved and made more centralized. The wreck of Titanic was found for the first time in 1985, as Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel searched the depths of the ocean. The wreckage of Titanic is found 12,500 feet below the ocean surface. The Titanic is notorious in history and gives representation of what humans can do and the overconfidence in nature. It is one of the worlds greatest tragedies. To preserve the history of Titanic and memorialize it, many books, documentaries, memorials and museums have been constructed.
