This occurs when human-written content reflects the predictable word choices LLMs use when generating text.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-error\">More than <strong>40%<\/strong> of 6th to 12th-grade teachers surveyed claimed to use AI detection tools as part of their grading process.<a href=\"#source-1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-container\">\n<div class=\"s-lib-box s-lib-box-std\">\n<h3 id=\"Why_FalsePositives_are_Damaging_Academics\" class=\"s-lib-box-title\"><strong>False-Positives are Damaging Academics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p>As of 2026, there is <strong>no universal method of detecting AI-written content<\/strong> in students&#8217; work. Most universities use a widely used offline tool known as <a href=\"http:\/\/turnitin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turnitin<\/a> to check coursework for AI and plagiarism.<\/p>\n<p>Turnitin is not available to the general public and is only offered as license-based software to universities, charging between $2-$6 per student<a href=\"#source-2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0and UC Berkeley signed a 10-year contract with Turnitin <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkup.org\/artificial-intelligence\/2025\/06\/26\/ai-detector-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">valued at $1.2m<\/a>.<a href=\"#source-3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>main issue<\/strong> is that professors are relying too much on Turnitin, which is not a 100% accurate tool for verifying AI writing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"common-uses\">\n<h3 id=\"Why_HumanWriting_is_Flagged_as_AI\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why Human-Writing is Flagged as AI?<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Using a Grammar Checker<\/strong>. Using tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/grammarly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grammarly<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/quillbot.com\/\">Quillbot<\/a> often does much more than check spelling. Oftentimes, it suggests rephrasing sentences to sound clearer but also more like AI-generated content.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-Native Speakers<\/strong>. The use of simple verbiage throughout an essay without much variation will usually be categorized as &#8220;AI&#8221;. Non-natives are common victims of this due to not knowing the language as extensively as native speakers. A french-born Yale student<a href=\"#source-4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> was accused of improper AI use in 2025 of something similar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low Burstiness<\/strong>. Humans tend to write with varying sentences length, otherwise known as &#8216;bursty&#8217; vs the LLMs, which write in similar length and rhythm. When humans write in this sort of structure, it is flagged as &#8220;AI&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lots of Transitional Language<\/strong>. Connecting sentences by using words like &#8220;Nevertheless,&#8221; &#8220;Furthermore,&#8221; &#8220;In addition,&#8221; etc. Content with a higher number of connector words tends to be flagged by detectors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Structured Formats<\/strong>. Writing that is a how-to guide, listicle, executive summary, or comparison article with a specific structure is often flagged. This is mainly due to many short facts or statements made, which lack a natural tone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-container\">\n<div class=\"s-lib-box s-lib-box-std\">\n<h3 class=\"s-lib-box-title\"><strong>Students &#8220;Questionably&#8221; Punished for AI<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Madeleine&#8221; (nursing student)<\/strong>. A nursing student named Madeleine was in her final year as a nursing student when Turnitin flagged 84% of her essay as &#8220;AI written.&#8221; Because of this, she had to wait 6 months for the investigation to conclude until the charges were eventually dropped against her.<a href=\"#source-5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Student at Nanyang Technological University (NTU)<\/strong>. Despite proof via Google Doc revisions (time-lapse of writing process). The student addressed her concerns while sharing that a citation alphabetical sorter has triggered an AI detector even though the 20 citations provided were accurate.<a href=\"#source-6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>High School Student Accused of AI Writing<\/strong>. At Eleanor Roosevelt High School in the District of Columbia, Ailsa Ostovitz had her music assignment flagged as AI, and her grade was docked. Using Multiple AI Detectors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/aidetector.com\/blog\/detect-ai-writing-without-false-positives-99-accuracy\/\">study<\/a> by the American Physiological Society, it was found that using multiple AI detectors when reviewing students&#8217; work <strong>reduced false-positives to nearly 0%<\/strong>. The AI detectors used in the study were <a href=\"https:\/\/copyleaks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copyleaks<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/detectgpt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DetectGPT<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gptzero.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GPTZero<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/originality.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Originality.ai<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their testing consisted of 348 total essays (174 AI-generated + 174 human-written), for the purpose of determining the accuracy of using multiple detectors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-secondary\">\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Most Accurate Detector<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Originality.ai<\/strong> was the <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">most accurate<\/span><\/strong> (<strong>97.98%<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>DetectGPT<\/strong> was the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">least accurate<\/span><\/strong> (<strong>69.70%<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-container\">\n<div class=\"s-lib-box s-lib-box-std\">\n<h3 class=\"s-lib-box-title\"><strong>3. Ask for a Verbal Conversation (about the subject)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p>If a teacher is curious about whether a student is using AI-generated content, another approach is to ask them spontaneously to <strong>discuss their writing<\/strong> in detail.<\/p>\n<p>Commonly, all that is needed to mention is &#8220;what were your sources for these facts?&#8221; or &#8220;what was your basis for your thinking in this paragraph?&#8221; and based on their reaction will see if they truly understand the material.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-container\">\n<div class=\"s-lib-box s-lib-box-std\">\n<h3 class=\"s-lib-box-title\"><strong>4. Requiring Citations \/ Sources<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p>Even though LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude have improved immensely in recent years, they still <strong>provide sources to outdated material or 404 pages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By requiring students to include the source of all facts and where thoughts came from, this can significantly reduce the chance of AI being used in the writing process.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-secondary\"><strong>Referencing Page Numbers<\/strong>: It is recommended to require referencing the page number (if a report, study, or other document) or the paragraph section on the webpage mentioned.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-container\">\n<div class=\"s-lib-box s-lib-box-std\">\n<h3 class=\"s-lib-box-title\"><strong>5. Redesigning Assignments (based on experiences)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p>AI writing is great for writing about people, places, and things.
