The students were instructed specifically to write essays based on fact-heavy STEM research to test AI detectors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2 Essays<\/strong>. The students were given 20 minutes to produce the essays, and 2 days later, were given the same instructions but to generate the essay with a generative AI platform of their choice.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: inherit; font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol';\">Survey<\/strong>. The students were given a survey to compare both their human-written and AI versions. Of the original 260 students, 190 completed the survey.<\/li>\n<li><b style=\"font-size: inherit; font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol';\">Consent<\/b>. The researchers requested the students&#8217; consent to participate in the study, and 174 students gave their consent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-container\">\n<div class=\"s-lib-box s-lib-box-std\">\n<h3 id=\"Part_2__Random_Selection\" class=\"s-lib-box-title\">Part 2 &#8211; Random Selection<\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p>Of the 174 available students (348 total essays), the study randomly selected <strong>50 paired essays<\/strong> (1 human essay + 1 AI-generated essay from the same student).<\/p>\n<p>However, 1 of the AI essays was a corrupted file. Therefore, 50 human essays plus 49 AI essays were in the final group for testing (99 total).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-container\">\n<div class=\"s-lib-box s-lib-box-std\">\n<h3 id=\"Part_3__Blindly_Uploaded\" class=\"s-lib-box-title\">Part 3 &#8211; Blindly Uploaded<\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s-lib-box-content\">\n<p><strong>99 essays<\/strong> were\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">uploaded to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/copyleaks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copyleaks<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/detectgpt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DetectGPT<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gptzero.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GPTZero<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/originality.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Originality.ai<\/a> in a blind manner<\/span>. Each essay received a score from 0 to 100.
