The Monica AI Detector (https://monica.im/) is an app that allows users to scan pasted text and receive an assessment of how likely it is AI-generated. The app is provided for limited free use and is included in a paid subscription that provides multiple AI-based apps and services.
Monica integrates multiple LLM models, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini to provide AI assistance with writing, coding, creating documents and presentations, image and video generation, and many other user needs.
This review covers the AI detector only.

Test #1 Monica vs. LLMs
The first test used 7 LLMs to generate a text using the same prompt (seen below), and scanned each text. Monica AI Detector passed this test with flying colors.
Prompt Used
“Write a 400-word article about the paper milling with the intent of being factual while also trying to sound as natural and human as possible, specifically, to pass AI detectors. Please remove all em dashes in your generation.”
Test #2 Monica vs AI Humanizers
The second test saw us running the ChatGPT-generated article through 8 AI-humanizers to make it harder for the Monica AI Detector to do its job when scanning for AI.
4 of the humanizers were able to bypass detection altogether, which leads us to believe that while Monica is great at detecting AI, it isn’t as good at detecting AI in humanized texts.

Test #3 False Positives
The third test assesses how likely Monica AI Detector is to falsely identify human writing as LLM-generated. We scanned a variety of 10 different texts from literature to an academic article to see if they would be misattributed as AI.
Although Monica barely passed the overall test, most of the incorrect results were for technical writing, which can be easily interpreted as less human.
